The Enduring Message of Minimalism

by Raymund Tamayo

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.” – Luke 12:31, New Living Translation

Thousands of years ago, Jesus Christ mentioned in one of His public messages that people should seek God, His heavenly Father, above all else and He (Father God) will give you everything you need.

Meditating on this verse, breaking it down, a realization came.

Hidden in this life-giving message are principles of minimalism:

1. Seek God above all else.

This means:

  • Setting priorities.
  • Taking away all non-beneficial activities and non-essential stuff.
  • Seeking happiness not in temporary earthly things, but in nourishing the spiritual life.
This means focusing and simplifying life and doing only our divine purpose.

2. And He will give you everything you need.

If we seek Him, God will give us:

  • The essentials.
  • Spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, financial, and relational growth.
  • Opportunities to live and work with passion.
  • Opportunities to contribute to the lives of others.
  • A good and blessed life.
  • A life of impact and purpose.
These are everything we need as a person to be whole.

Minimalist principles have been encouraged and practiced for thousands of years. That kind of enduring message must be of utmost value to still be echoing today.
