Top 10 Minimalist Living Tips - #8
Note: In this series of posts, I will share the 10 most valuable minimalist living tips that I have learned in the past four years. These guidelines are helping me a lot in my continuous walk in the path of simplicity, and I would like to share them with you. At the end of the series, I will gather them all together for a synopsis.
Minimalist Living Tip #8: Apply minimalist principles gradually.
This is perhaps the best thing I’ve learned that made me more consistent in applying minimalist principles in my life.
Eventually, as I practiced minimalist principles gradually, I didn’t need to “apply” them anymore. Why? Because they already became ingrained into my system. They have developed to become my lifestyle.
I don’t have to force myself into living with less than 33 items of clothing anymore. It’s already natural.
In trying to walk the path of minimalism, I’ve come to discover that I need to change a lot of my habits.
For example, I used to say “yes” to every request and invite thrown my way. And it was to the point of spreading myself so thin that I had absolutely no time to take care of myself and do the things that I love.
But in minimalism, you learn that you need to let go of all non-essential activities to make time for the essentials. You learn to do less so you can do better.
I needed to change the “yes man” attitude and learn to say no appropriately. I realized then that it was somewhat difficult, and sometimes impolite, when applied abruptly.
And then I found out that the secret to changing a habit, and to make it long-lasting, is to apply it gradually.
When you apply things gradually, your mind forms a groove. And as you continue practicing the new habit, the groove becomes deeper and deeper, making it a part of your system. Sooner or later, it becomes automatic.
Gradually applying minimalist principles creates enduring and lifelong changes.
