Note: In this series of posts, I will share the 10 most valuable minimalist living tips that I have learned in the past four years. These guidelines are helping me a lot in my continuous walk in the path of simplicity, and I would like to share them with you. At the end of the series, I will gather them all together for a synopsis.
Minimalist Living Tip #9: Find your own path in the vast minimalism spectrum.
There is no one direct approach to minimalism. Actually, it is a wide spectrum. You can just go halfway or midway, or you can quit using money altogether.
Don’t compare your level of simplicity with me and that of others. What’s important is you are on your way to it like the rest of us. Minimalism is actually just a tool to help the cream in your life rise up. And we all have different creams.
When I was in college and would feel overwhelmed with studies and the many extracurricular activities I was involved in, my mom would always remind me, “The cream will rise to the top.” She meant that the most important would always make itself evident, and I would get it done if I focused on it.
Of course, she was right.
Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist calls this rational minimalism. Here is what he said in one of his earlier blog posts:
“Find a style of minimalism that works for you. One that is not cumbersome, but freeing based on your values, desires, passions, and rational thinking.
“Be aware that your definition will not come overnight. It will take time. It will evolve—even change drastically as your life changes. It will require give and take. You will make a few mistakes along the way. And thus, it will also require humility.
But ultimately, you will begin to remove the unneeded things from your life. And when you do, you will find space to intentionally promote the things you most value and remove anything that distracts you from it.”
So don’t be in a hurry. Take your time and find the right path, your own path, to minimalism.
