Top 10 Minimalist Living Tips - #4

Note: In this series of posts, I will share the 10 most valuable minimalist living tips that I have learned in the past four years. These guidelines are helping me a lot in my continuous walk in the path of simplicity, and I would like to share them with you. At the end of the series, I will gather them all together for a synopsis.

Minimalist Living Tip #4: Live in the moment.
"Nothing ever happened in the Past, it happened in the Now. Nothing ever shall happen in the Future, it shall happen in the Now.” – Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now
The present is the only real thing. The past is over and gone, and the future is still to come. The only thing that is actually true right now is the present moment.

You can never live your life in the past or the future. You can only live it now.

This is one of the best lessons I’ve learned from living a minimalist life. Being present in the moment. Learning to let go and move forward from the past and not worrying about the future. Simply focus and appreciate the now.

Of course, it doesn’t mean that you totally overlook what had been and what will be. It is completely possible to enjoy and focus on the now by learning from the past and without sacrificing the future.

What’s the purpose of the past and the future then?

The past is a tool to help us remember our mistakes to never do them again. It can also be used to reminisce a great event or happy memory to inspire us when we need it.

Meanwhile, the future, or imagining the future, can help us look forward in life. Similar to a beautiful past memory, our goals and dreams can help inspire and motivate us to continue on living.

The important thing, however, after remembering the past and looking forward into the future, is acknowledging the present. Why? Because the present is where actual life happens.

Right now is where our attention needs to be.

Shifting Focus

Problems, disappointments, and anxieties happen when we dwell too much on the past and the future.

The mind is tricky because it tends to drift into past regrets or past joys, or into the future, conjuring visions of better or worse days that may or may not take place.

And because the past and the future are not really in the here and now, it only affects us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Living in the moment, focusing in the here and now, is the answer to a lot of unnecessary stress.
