10 Tips on How to be a Positive Person - #9 - Live in the Moment
Note: In this series of posts, I will share 10 tips on how to be a more positive person. At the end of the series, I will gather them all together for a synopsis.
"I promise myself that I will enjoy every minute of the day that is given me to live." – Thích Nhất HạnhAnother simple idea of creating more positivity in your life is to live in the moment.
Most of the negativity in a person’s life is caused by his regrets of the past (hoping to bring back things as they once were or putting the blame of the present to what once was) and the worries and fears of the future (which are impossible to exactly predict).
It does not make sense to regret or hate the past because it is already over and nobody can do anything about it. If you have to think about a sad or an awful past, you should only do so in the perspective of learning the lessons that can be taken from it.
It does not seem right to be anxious about the future as well since no one can truly know what is going to happen. Yes, it is perfectly okay to prepare for the future, but what is not good is when you get terrified by it. It will be difficult to have progress when you are weighed down by your fear of the future.
Living in the present is essential for a life of positivity. When you live in the moment you are mindful and focused. You are aware, relaxed, and appreciative of what is happening around you. It would be very hard for any negative thing to enter your thoughts as you are focusing on the present moment.
Here are some tips on how to live in the moment:
1. Do breathing pauses
Breathing pauses are stopping and sitting down for a few minutes only to pay attention to your breathing.

1. Do breathing pauses
Breathing pauses are stopping and sitting down for a few minutes only to pay attention to your breathing.
Start with 2 minutes and gradually increase. Most people do have a hard time staying still even for just a minute. Set a timer and breathe in and out while being still. Focus on how the air goes in and out of your body.
When you concentrate on your breathing, your mind goes back to the present. Do this several times each day to lessen your stresses and take in some positivity.
2. Notice the small things
Be mindful of anything you do. When you are washing the dishes, just focus on the simple act of washing the dishes. When you are eating, look at the food and savor every bite of it. When you are drinking water, feel its coolness going through your mouth down to your throat.
3. Talk to yourself
This is kind of odd, but very effective in bringing yourself back to the present.

3. Talk to yourself
This is kind of odd, but very effective in bringing yourself back to the present.
For instance, again while eating, you can slowly describe the taste and flavor of what is in your mouth. While washing the dishes, tell yourself slowly, “I am washing the dishes.” It’s a little strange at first especially when there are other people around, but once you get the hang of it, it will feel normal. Okay, don’t do it when other people are around.
