10 Tips on How to be a Positive Person - #8 - Choose to be Happy

Note: In this series of posts, I will share 10 tips on how to be a more positive person. At the end of the series, I will gather them all together for a synopsis.

"Happiness is a choice. You are the only person who can make you happy. You’re as happy as you choose to be." – Rick Warren
Happiness does not come by chance. Positivity either.

Actually, everything that takes place in life is dictated by the choices we make every day. Even the seemingly insignificant ones have an effect on what we are and what we will become.

It is one thing so special about human beings: we always have a choice. And we can choose to exercise that choice in every single moment.

If we want to focus on every trouble, every comment, every wrongdoing that other people do, then we can drag our way into life with hate and bitterness in the heart until the day we die. We can choose that.

If we want to focus on being happy, emptying our hearts of any negativity by releasing total forgiveness, and living a life of passion and purpose, we can choose to do that as well.

Nobody can make yourself happy. If you need someone else to be happy, then you are setting up yourself for a lot of hurt in life.

We have to learn to fill up our own cups because quite frankly, we are the only person in this world who can do that effectively and sustainably. Happiness has always been internal, not external.

You can choose to be happy by:

1. Waking up with a positive mindset

It is easier to create positivity throughout the day when you begin it with a positive mindset. Realize that there are a lot of reasons to smile and be happy about every single day.

Even little stuff such as a hot cup of coffee, nice weather, opportunity to earn a living are things to be grateful for. The mere fact that you still woke up, able to breathe and live, is good news!

Build momentum to your day by thinking positive the moment you wake up.

2. Learning to pause when angry

The worst decisions a person makes are always during a time when he is furious.

Whether it is something you can say or do, it is always a bad idea to act or react when you are in the heat of the moment. Anger takes away all of the mind’s rationality.

Whenever you are angry, try pausing for a second before you say or do anything. Notice that you are out of control by paying attention to subtle body languages like fast breathing and teeth clenching.

By doing so, you will be able to avoid any regrettable actions that would lead to more stress and unhappiness.

3. Avoiding comparisons between you and others

Another good way of sabotaging your happiness and self-esteem is to compare yourself with others.

Never ever do that. Keep in mind that you are unique, and there is only one person exactly like you.

There are two consequences the moment you compare yourself with others. One, when you are comparing yourself with someone you think is better, you begin to harbor thoughts of self-pity, inadequacy, and powerlessness. Two, when you are comparing yourself with someone you think is worse, you become arrogant, self-righteous, and deceived.

Both paths do not bring any happiness or positivity in life. Avoid them at all cost.

Key Idea: Happiness is a choice. Begin the day with a positive mindset and practice self-control. Realize that you are special so don’t judge yourself against other people.
