What is True Love? Part 2 - How to Love Your Spouse (Message Outline - February 10, 2019)

Sermon outline by Raymund Tamayo

Intro – Love and Respect

Ephesians 5:21-22, 25; Ephesians 5:33

Before learning the three things on How to Love Your Spouse, you must first learn the importance of Love and Respect in an intimate relationship.
  • We are instructed by God to love and respect each other – Leviticus 19:18; 1 Peter 2:17
  • Men appreciate respect, women appreciate love
  • Love and respect are both powerful for a happy marriage
The source of our love and respect for our partner is Christ.

1. True Love is a Choice

John 3:16; Ephesians 5:25-27
  • True love is a choice, not just a feeling or an emotion
    • Marital love is not just based on feelings. Feelings come and go, so there has to be something more to sustain the relationship.
    • Marital love is based on a promise. When you get married, you take vows, which are promises to your spouse.
  • Choice involves decisions
  • Choice involves deeds – actions
  • What are we going to do to maintain our love? We need to purify ourselves in the Truth, so we can have sincere and deep love for one another (1 Peter 1:22).

2. True Love is a Commitment

Proverbs 20:25
  • Commitment to serve – Galatians 5:13
    • Serve your spouse as unto the Lord
  • Commitment to forgive – Mark 11:25
    • Do not keep a record of wrongs
  • Commitment to encourage – Hebrew 3:13
    • Receive the encouragement from God’s Word, so you can encourage your spouse
  • Commitment to respect – Ephesians 5:33
    • Respect one another
  • Commitment to love – John 13:34-35
    • Loving one another is a testimony for Christ
No matter what.

3. True Love is a Channel

1 John 4:7
  • To be a channel of God’s love, you must know God and be born of God (1 John 4:7)
  • How do you know God? You must be born again (John 3:3-8)
  • Ask God for you to be a channel of blessing to your spouse FIRST AND FOREMOST
  • You need to be filled with the Holy Spirit to truly become a channel of love to your spouse (Ephesians 5:18)
