Who chases a perfect life?
There were days when everything felt messy. Plans didn't work out, and it felt like everything was behind. Other people's lives seem so much more beautiful, successful, or peaceful compared to mine. This makes me sometimes think that maybe I'm not doing something right.
I came across this Japanese concept called Wabi-Sabi. From what I understand, Wabi-Sabi is about seeing beauty in things that are imperfect, temporary, simple, and touched by time. Like an old wooden table with scratches from years of use. Or a cracked coffee cup that someone keeps because it has sentimental value. The wrinkles of someone who has lived a long life.
None of these things are perfect.
And yet, when you look closely, there is something profoundly beautiful about them. Maybe because their imperfections tell us that they have lived.
Modern life, with AI, social media, and all, can make us believe that everything has to look polished. The perfect body. The perfect spouse. The perfect family. The perfect career. The perfect house. The perfect life displayed online... but real life doesn't work that way.
People struggle. Relationships go through difficult seasons. Dreams take longer than expected. Plans change. People change. We get tired, and we make mistakes.
And none of that makes a life less meaningful.
Wabi-Sabi gave me a different way of looking at things. Perhaps scars are not something I need to hide. Maybe an unfinished chapter is part of the story. Maybe a difficult season is not proof that my life is going in the wrong direction, but an uncomfortable time that precedes growth.
We sometimes forget that even the moon is not full every night. Yet somehow, we still look up to admire it. We still find it beautiful.
Perhaps peace begins there, not when everything finally becomes perfect, but when we stop asking life to be something it was never meant to be.
Earthy life is temporary. It changes and gets broken. It also gets repaired. Some things fade, and some things remain. That's the beauty of life. We don't have to be perfect before we allow ourselves to feel at peace.
Sometimes, we simply have to make peace with ourselves and realize the beauty we already have within.
